A new differential diagnosis pipeline named motorTree designed to detect motor disorders is now available.
Based on AI, it provides differential diagnosis between Parkinson’s disease (PD), Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), and Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB). Our novel framework called Lifespan Tree of Brain Anatomy now enables the differential diagnosis of parkinsonian disorders by modelling anatomical changes across the lifespan using MRI and AI. This approach generates a motor lifespan tree that visually represents and distinguishes Parkinson’s disease from atypical parkinsonism subtypes like PSP, DLB and MSA with improved accuracy compared to traditional methods. With training on over 37 000 MRIs and validation on independent cohorts, this interpretable tool offers promising support for complex clinical decision-making in neurodegenerative diseases. The motor tree not only enhances diagnosis but also offers insights into how different parkinsonian disorders diverge anatomically over time, opening doors for earlier and more precise identification.
